The Beginner's Makeup Thread

#1

I know, I know... I'm a GG. Before anyone hangs me up by my toenails (jk I know you wouldn't. Y'all love me Tongue) let me explain why I am posting this here:

1. GG's, for the most part, come out of the womb learning how to do our makeup and hair.

2. I think you need a thread so you can swap tips that are aimed particularly at TG's. I'm just laying down some basics. We already have a "main" thread to post looks.

3. SCC is coming up AND I AM SO MAD I AM NOT GETTING TO GO... we unfortunately are having to move around that time. Anyways, I know everyone wants to look like the fine beeyotches we know you are, just amplified slightly, and there was a lot of makeup talk going on in the SCC thread.

4. I do a lot of free-lance makeup artist work so I know a thing or two about different facial shapes, tones, and skin types. I also went to cosmetology school so I eat, sleep, and breathe beauty products.

Anyways, I really decided to post this when Sarah and I were talking makeup for the Doctor Who convention we are going to at the end of the month. *insert squeal of excitement* I'm going to break my tips up into different posts. Oh and of course EVERYONE is welcome to post here and if any mods think this thread should be moved then go ahead.

PS- would anyone be interested in me posting tutorial videos?

LET'S TALK SKIN

Everyone wants beautiful skin. The ideal skin type is even-toned, youthful in appearance, and radiant. Unfortunately, some of us (aka me) are having to work with what we got... dry patches, uneven tone, acne scars, dark circles, dull appearance... While my skin is not perfect by any means I have come up with a regimen that has greatly improved my horrible skin! This is my nightly routine.

Step One: Drink a lot of water. Your skin will be the first to tell on you if you aren't drinking enough H2O.

Step Two: Remove makeup. Never ever ever ever go to bed with your makeup still on. You're asking for comedones, which are those gross white or blackheads, to pop up all over your face. My favorite makeup remover is Pond's Cold Cream (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=17105&catid=182285&aid=338666&aparam=17105&kpid=17105). I used to work at a nursing home and there were several women who were in their nineties and had the most beautiful skin. All of them swore by this stuff. It's a classic for a reason! Not to mention the fact that I sort of feel like a 1920's movie star using it. lol. It smells a bit like baby powder and if you have a sensitivity to mineral oil you might want to stay away. I slather it onto my whole face, let it sit and dissolve all my makeup, and then run a wash cloth under warm water and place it over my face. Then I wipe it off. Coconut oil is a great alternative to this.

Step Three: Cleanse! You can actually stop with the cold cream or coconut oil. On my lazy nights that is all I do. However, sometimes I want to feel really clean and I follow up with a cleanser. Personally, my husband and I use African Black Soap. It works for me, but it may be too harsh for others. Every three nights I exfoliate. Here is my cheap and effective trick- Plain aspirin. Yup. I grab a few, sprinkle some water on them, then rub them into a paste and apply to my slightly damp face. This is also great if you have breakouts because the aspirin reduces the swelling!

Step Four: Tone like Olivia Newton John in the 80's! This is a great way to know if you got everything. Because I prefer cheap and effective products, I use apple cider vinegar. It has so many benefits, including balancing your skin's PH level. Use one part organic apple cider vinegar to two parts distilled or filtered water. Apply with a cotton pad. The smell goes away, I promise!

Step Five: Moisturize! For night time you need something a bit heavier... Again, I use coconut oil for this, but it's not the best for everyone! For drugstore night creams, I recommend Pond's Dry Skin Cream (http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showr...isturizers)... seriously, you can't go wrong with the classics! For day time I use Cerave ( http://www.dermstore.com/product_Moistur..._32781.htm).

Optional: PAMPER YOURSELF! We can't always afford to head to the spa, so bring the spa to your bathroom. Light a candle, turn on some soothing music, and run a bubble bath. Cleanse your face and steam it with a damp wash cloth, then apply a face masque. My favorites include this mint julep masque (http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/queen-helene-masque-mint-julep/ID=prod7481-product?ext=gooBeauty_PLA_Masks_Strips_ampersand_Peels_prod7481_pla&adtype=pla&kpid=sku307481&sst=4b279af9-caea-41b2-96bc-a87ac6ba3c0f) or this mud masque (http://www.swansonvitamins.com/queen-helene-mud-pack-masque-8-oz-cream?SourceCode=INTL405&CAWELAID=1269608370&mkwid=5mnjfIJw&pcrid=54347464447&gclid=CPf1grfN6r4CFUZp7AoddQgAsQ). Try to avoid your delicate eye area when applying! Leave them on while you relax in the bath or read a book. When you rinse them off with cool water your face will feel baby soft... don't forget to moisturize!

FOUNDATION

Choosing a foundation can be tough. It's not just about saying "Oh, I'm pale... let's grab this light looking one." Before you choose your foundations, ask yourself a few questions.

What sort of coverage am I looking for?

There are various levels of coverage in foundations. Some people want just a hint of something to even out skintone. In this case you will look into BB creams, tinted moisturizers, or sheer foundations. If you are like me you like medium to full-coverage. This means it covers everything and gives you a blank slate to work with.

What is my skin type?

If you have dry skin, stay away from a lot of matte foundations and powders. If you have oily skin, stay away from "hydrating" or "dewy" foundations/finishes. Powders and matte foundations will emphasize lines and dry patches, while dewier foundations will slide right off of oily skin and offer no oil control.

What is my skin tone?

Getting matched by someone who does makeup professionally is a great help when choosing foundations for yourself. However, we can't always head to the MAC counter. Take a good look at yourself in the mirror in various lighting. Are there pink undertones? Do you have a ruddier complexion, or do you lean more towards an olive or yellow tone? The tricky thing about foundation is that it can be a perfect match as far as level of lightness or darkness, but if the tone is wrong it can mess you all up. I can't touch anything with a pink undertone!

Choosing your foundation:

So now we have a game plan. If you are trying something on in store, apply a dab to the inside of your wrist and see how it looks. If you are in an actual makeup store, use a wedge sponge (they should have them available), to apply it to your jaw line. If you need to shop online and you're not sure, I will be glad to look at photos of you and help you find your match!

Applying your foundation:

It's not as easy as rubbing some onto your face, as I used to believe in high school. I would leave the house looking flawless and by second period I'd be a cakey mess. The following steps can also help you keep your face on during humid weather or while dancing your cute butt off.

Step one: Apply moisturizer. Give it a second to sink in, otherwise your makeup will slide all over your face.

Step two: Prime time! A good primer will keep makeup looking fabulous all day! I prefer to have one for face and a separate for under eyes. I use this for my eyes (http://www.eyeslipsface.com/studio/eyes/...eye_primer), and this for my face (http://www.eyeslipsface.com/studio/face/...ace_primer). I also have various high-end primers which I can post if anyone is interested!

Step three: Time to apply foundation. While using clean fingers can work, I have found that brushes give me the most flawless look. I LOVE this brush for foundation (http://www.eyeslipsface.com/studio/tools...wder_brush)... it says for powder, but it is great for liquid! I seriously have three of them. Another favorite of mine which I swear by and is well worth it's price tag is this one (http://www.sephora.com/pro-airbrush-55-P...Id=1419373).

Step four: Apply concealer. Yes, I apply it after my foundation but that's just my preference. You can switch these steps. I apply mine under my eyes, around the corners of my nose, and over any bumps that my foundation didn't cover. Different concealer colors cancel out different things. For my face I use a skin-toned one, but for the blue and purple circles under my eyes I use a yellow concealer. Dab it on gently with your ring finger and pat until blended.

Step five: Set! My tried and true setting powder is yet another ELF product (http://www.eyeslipsface.com/studio/face/...ion_powder). I apply it with a really fluffy kabuki brush and buff in small circles all over my face. Up next is a setting spray. This helps to minimize any places that might look "caked" if you have dry patches and to make the foundation look more like your skin. It also makes the foundation stay and controls oil. Spray it on and let it set before applying the rest of your makeup. Sometimes I gently pat it in with my fingers. I like these products (http://www.eyeslipsface.com/studio/face/...st_and_set), (http://www.nyxcosmetics.com/p-196-makeup...spray.aspx), (http://www.urbandecay.com/urban-decay/face/all-nighter-makeup-setting-spray-travel-size/85230.html?src=GOOGLEPRODUCT&zmam=45472711&zmas=1&zmac=2&zmap=85230&kpid=85230&utm_source=GOOGLE&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_campaign=Urban%20Decay%20Product%20Listings&gclid=CPTlg_3U6r4CFXTl7AodmwgAtw)

I have under-eye wrinkles due to allergies and I swear by coconut oil! I use it as a night cream. Otherwise I would recommend something with Retinol in it. A lot of face creams and such have it in there. Vitamin C powder is also good for wrinkles... I have a powder that I dissolve into my face lotion and use.

As far as makeup goes to hide wrinkles, you're going to want a hydrating primer to plump up your skin. Stay away from really matte, thick foundations and powders because they will settle into lines.

I recommend these foundations!

I would still set with the ELF powder... unlike powder foundations, the setting powder is so finely milled that it would not set into fine lines and wrinkles. I use it on my mom who is almost 50 and she loves it.

Wow! I wasn't expecting you to go to these extremes. I feel kinda bad for prompting this, you wrote like a detailed essay on it! Tongue

Thank you so much ! This is really great info here. I'm not a total beginner, but when it comes to making makeup stay on in such ungodly heat I am!
