Synth Britannia

Documentary following a generation of post-punk musicians who took the synthesiser from the experimental fringes to the centre of the pop stage.

In the late 1970s, small pockets of electronic artists including the Human League, Daniel Miller and Cabaret Volatire were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard, and they dreamt of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain.

The crossover moment came in 1979 when Gary Numan's appearance on Top of the Pops with Tubeway Army's Are 'Friends' Electric? heralded the arrival of synthpop. Four lads from Basildon known as Depeche Mode would come to own the new sound whilst post-punk bands like Ultravox, Soft Cell, OMD and Yazoo took the synth out of the pages of NME and onto the front page of Smash Hits.

By 1983, acts like Pet Shop Boys and New Order were showing that the future of electronic music would lie in dance music.
Contributors include Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant.

Cool!! Thanks!! I'll have a butchers later tonight!
I've always liked the synth. I see it as a device/musical instrument, that lets you create a never-ending horizon of sounds you could NEVER get before without being Delia Derbyshire!! Something you could be very creative with and come up with VERY interesting sounds. Sad, how some see it as an abomination to the musical world and call it, "plastic music". They just don't understand what it's all about and never venture into the past far enough to realize that the electric guitar was only just invented about 65 to 75 years ago!! The electric bass is even younger!! Let ALONE the fact that a mere few hundred years ago there were also no such things as violins, drums (per se) and wind instruments (outside of a stick of wood carved into a flute).
One sad thing about the synth today is that most of them (from what I can recall) don't even allow much in the way of creativity, you just push a button or two to tell the synth what preset patch you want it to play and it does it!! Except for a very short use of the Buchla synthesizer back in the late `80's, I've never had the experience of putting wires together to physically create my own sounds, but at least I've had the chance to move numerous buttons, knobs and sliders to create my own sounds! At least three of the synths I have now allow me to create, or at LEAST change, the sounds already onboard.
One of my first excursions into the Mini-Moog back in the early `70's allowed me to, SOMEHOW, create a REALLY interesting sound that warbled all over the place in random fashion, NEVER to be played the same way twice, and took a good minute or so for it to play a single key stroke!! How I did it, I haven't a clue!! I tried to do it again later and failed miserably!! I even wrote down the patch I created and still couldn't copy it!

Way cool!! Thanks for the video!! Makes me want to break out my Gary Numan records!! I fucking HATED the piss poor camera work, though!!!!!!! Any time a modern section came on, I'd have to look away from the screen!!!! Back in the mid `80's, I was in college in a t.v. production class and one of the FIRST things they pounded into our heads was to HOLD THE CAMERA STILL!!!! No sooner did they teach us that than all these shows, movies and commercials start showing up with the fucking wiggly cameras!!!! How FUCKING nerve wracking!!!!!
Anyway, one thing about this show is that, NOW I know what Depeche Mode is like and I like them!! A number of these bands I'd heard of via various people in my band at the time and I never bothered to listen to ANY of those bands. Now I find out that I not only like them, but, they had records out back then that I actually liked, but had NO idea it was any of these bands!! Throbbing Gristle, Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, I always thought they were some kind of hardcore thrashing punk band, like the Sex Pistols. Next time I go to Jerry's, I just might start snatching up all the Depeche Mode records he's got!! Lol.
I'm glad they at least had about 5 seconds of Tangerine Dream in this video!! Everything was Kraftwerk based!!
But they never touched on some of my faves, Kissing The Pink, Rupert Hine, Art Of Noise, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Laurie Anderson, White Noise, Thomas Dolby.....

Notice Mr. Xylophone is wearing a skirt. He does this a lot! :-) I'm pretty sure this pre-dates my skirt-wearing days by 2 years. However, I'd also wear a leotard and silky pantyhose, as well.

The first two are a bit too dancey for me, especially the second one. It's disco!
The third one was good!
The 4th was good, but a tad on the dancey side, especially in chorus land.
I'll get to the others tomorrow, I gotta get ready for bed. I have to be back at prison I MEAN, work in the morning!
Try these, though.
