meter for diy potassium checking when self-medicating with spironolactone

Found this and thought I'd share.

The meter:

Can be bought on Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/HORIBA-LAQUAtwin-3200456566-Compact-Potassium/dp/B00BFF7FSY/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1462096664&sr=8-9&keywords=potassium+ion+meter

The safe range for tested saliva is from 320 - 1400 ppm, rounded and then provided with a cushion for the meter's resolution and standard of error respectively.

The ACTUAL safe range for saliva is 8 - 40 mmol/L which calculates to 307.69 - 1538.46 ppm, which rounds to 310 - 1530 ppm, and the meter's resolution and standard error in the 100's of ppm is 10 and in the 1000's is 100, thus the maximum safe reading on the device is actually only 1400 ppm and the minimum is actually 320. You shouldn't ever need to worry about the minimum on spiro, it's the maximum you would need to watch since spiro is potassium sparing, meaning, you don't flush excess normally.

Procedure of use is to:

First, recalibrate the device at least once a day, or preferably before each use using the provided solutions. More solution can be bought on Amazon as well for $7 a bottle in packs of 6.

Second, either stick the head of the device in your mouth against your cheek to collect saliva directly or spit on the device's sensor head and move it around to completely fill the sensor head with a thin film of saliva.

Finally, press the measurement button to take the reading.

The device is expensive, inexact, and tedious to use, but if you're going to self-medicate on spiro you do need to watch your potassium levels, it's your life if you fail to, and this device is ultimately less expensive than weekly mail-order lab tests.
