I think it's pretty undeniable that there has been a shift in the relationship of "trans people" to the rest of society at least in the "civilized world" and the internet certainly comes into play, but the media is responsible for a lot of it. As for transgender/transexual being more acceptable in the modern day, I think a LOT of that depends on what region someone lives in and also the subcommunities that people associate with. In a lot of ways the increased exposure is a double edged sword, as sometimes the exposure serves to encourage tg/ts people and others it sparks outrage and backlash against what was once a much quieter minority.
The internet is much the same, serving to help, and harm at the same time. There used to be a time before the internet and before there was a wealth of published information in print, and a lot of people with tg/ts feelings would literally have to go to places like dirty (as in pornographic) bookstores to find any published information. With the advent of the internet, it almost literally puts information at peoples fingertips, and even a homeless person with a library card or a smartphone and a mcdonalds can readily find information.
The drawback is that often the internet can obscure relevant and correct information with vast quantities of irrelevant information and just plain bullshit. There are articles that say a few herbs like fenugreek and red clover will jumpstart a transition, and a myriad of articles that say NO herb can help someone to, say, grow breast tissue. Many of them go on to say that these herbs are terribly dangerous and that the only safe way to proceed is to take pharmaceuticals from a doctor (as if doctors and pharmaceuticals never killed anyone.....)
On top of that, there are people who are selling good products (like pueraria mirifica preparations) and plenty of others selling nearly worthless products, like pills that two a day should "turn you into a woman" despite largely inert ingredients.....or even more ridiculous people are selling "magic spell necklaces, rings, amulets etc." that will "cause you to change sex just by wearing them." And we live in a world with people desperate and stupid enough to actually believe these claims and waste a metric crapload of their money.
And with all the increased communication between tg/ts people from the internet we actually are nowhere closer to having the "transgender community" term people love to throw around. I can think of one large trans forum on the internet that is a stellar example....misinformation is constantly spread, there is near endless fighting and bitching among the members, and to top it off the liberal social justice warrior type use these platforms to push their agendas like trying to convince people that the gender binary is complete BS, that anyone can make up a new gender and a set of pronouns to match, and that it's the right of this minority to demand the primarily cisgender majority use their made up pronouns and new genders despite there being 79 or more of them. They want to call a lot of everyday folks biggots for not using these new terms even though they are oppressive to everyday communication. And no matter how many new terms they come up with they assume it is their right to force the public to study them and use them. And these types are using the internet to indoctrinate younger tg/ts people into believing these gender theories as absolute fact. And the honest truth is that all the snowflakey social justice silliness is really starting to put a new negative stigma on what it means to be TG/TS.
