I think to some degree Julie is correct. But, I think the base numbers has, for the majority, has risen only slightly. I think the internet has raised the awareness and helped shape the public at large that is more acceptable than say 50 yrs ago.
Just like the numbers of gays and lesbians has not "jumped" because of the internet. There has always been a certain percentage of them. The only difference now is there are Equal Protection Laws that ease the burden somewhat professionally of "Coming Out".
Transgenders may be a little higher in number due to the general relaxed acceptance though.
