Every year, there’s hope that EA's NHL franchise will finally capitalize on its potential, but NHL 25 largely repeats the pattern of previous years. Despite some minor improvements, such as the Sustained Pressure System and Exhaustion Engine, NHL 25 feels almost identical to its predecessor, NHL 24. The game does benefit from being built exclusively for current-gen consoles, resulting in sharper visuals, smoother animations, and improved player likenesses. These upgrades enhance the aesthetic experience, making the action on the ice visually satisfying.
The most significant update is to Franchise Mode, which includes an overhauled hub menu, making it easier to navigate and find stats without jumping between screens. The changes extend to player negotiations, where GMs now have to work harder to attract free agents with various incentives like first-line play promises or personal negotiations. New features like no-movement clauses and offseason discussions with coaches add strategic depth to the mode. However, for those not interested in management sims, these additions might not feel impactful.
Unfortunately, Be a Pro Mode remains untouched, with recycled cinematics and a lack of meaningful updates. Despite the game's visual improvements, NHL 25 fails to make significant strides mechanically, leaving fans wanting more from the first current-gen exclusive in the franchise.
