How much testosterone is optimal?

On the face of it, I suppose the answer to that for our purposes has to be ‘as little as possible’, but I’m still a little hazy on the optimal hormonal balance. I understand that we ideally seek to keep a functional level of testosterone in our bodies, but also need this to be closer to female levels (0.8-3.1 nmol/L) than male (11-36 nmol/L)

I am hypogonadal, so without supplementation my T level drops to a point where I feel so unwell that I find it hard to function, typically around 3 nmol/l or lower. I feel terrible with my level this low, so to redress this, I use prescription testosterone gel to improve my general wellbeing. On the maximum allowable UK gel dosage, I can just about get into the official male reference range most of the time. In reality, I use a lot less than this amount in the hope that this will make the changes I am looking for more likely to occur.

What is puzzling me is that I know too much T is a bad thing, but on the other hand some T is required for aromatisation to E. I’m just guessing how much (or how little) TRT to use to get this balance just right. I am also using RR and WP to try to prevent any excess testosterone getting converted to DHT.

I was just wondering if anyone else has any ideas or suggestion regarding the right balance and how to ensure that it has been achieved. I know this topic has been covered here before, but it seems somehow contradictory. Should I just keep my T level as low as I can tolerate it, or should I maybe leave a little extra in the hope that it gets aromatised?


Has anyone else been puzzled by this, or maybe I have just misunderstood the hormonal balance question?
