Maybe he reeeally liked you and was worried about your reaction? My past experiences were 10+ years ago and times have changed. People today are somewhat more liberal when it comes to sexuality, but stigmas will always remain.

I can't say that you'll find your answer here, but I would consider posting it on Reddit where you'll get thousands of eyes-on and perhaps hundreds of responses.
