In my case, its not a division of personality. It is correction of the wrongs laid upon me, being given a male name, being expected to conform to social expectations. It is a completion of sorts.
It can be liberating to those who feel the tight constraints of an opposite gender name. For some, there are psychological benefits of having a female name. For some, there is no need, as you stated. Whether it is a sort of validation, well, it may be , or just conjecture.
I do not believe that it is strictly bound to any particular label that may be given..i.e. crossdresser, transsexual, etc. I suspect it is more of personal preference.
