RIBOFLAVIN, A TESTOSTERONE 5a-REDUCTASE INHIBITOR

Riboflavin is a common product of several fungi and bacteria grown under proper conditions 2'3*.
It is used against riboflavin deficiency and hyperlipoproteinemia. It is reported here, for the first time, as a testosterone 5a-reductase inhibitor. (per the study).

Also, riboflavin is a co-factor of many oxido- reductases, while testosterone 5a-reductase utilizes the pyridine nucleotide, NADPH, to reduce testosterone. It is interesting that the co-factor for flavin enzymes, riboflavin, inhibits pyridine linked enzyme reaction.
