Favorite movie, The Right Stuff. I’ve never looked up to an unrelated man like the way I did Chuck Yeager. 2nd favorite movie is Crossroads (1986). 3rd, Amadeus. Honorable Mention: Gone With The Wind.

But, I turned away from TV/Movies 20 years ago. I stopped watching sports 10 years ago.

I like Country from the 80s & early 90s, but mainly just the hit makers. I could rattle off the Country Billboard Collection from the late 50s to middle 70s by heart. My first memories of music as a child besides gospel, was Hank Sr., followed by Merle Haggard. I’m a huge Osborne Brother Bluegrass fan. Their harmonies are amazing.

At one point I had the entire LP collection of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin & Pink Floyd. Being from the South I of course love Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Allman Brothers, etc.

I don’t keep quotes fresh in my brain. They always seem to pop up in times of need, when something triggers a memory. My latest favorite quote however is from my latest obsession, Flannery O’Connor. I do have a deep love of music, I play my guitar daily. My wife had an extensive musical background and roots, going through her mother, grandparents and beyond. I, however, consider myself a book nerd.

We have well over a thousand books in the house on two wall to wall, floor to ceiling custom built book cases. I turned our traditional dining room into a den/study/library/man cave of sorts/elegant office. I put in another full wall case, myself. I filled it, err ... crammed it, full of historical books. While I rarely read, I consider myself a collector of important books. Most of these center around Georgia. While Ive read less than 10% of my collection, one thing I enjoy doing is knowing everything there is to know about the person who wrote it. The reason for the books, the cliff notes readers digest version of the book, and any side by-line associated with the story, before after or another important connection. That might seem odd, but I like the story behind the story. As well as the story, itself.

Anyway, I mentioned a quote by Flannery O’Connor .... I have one of her books I bought years ago. I recently reacquainted myself with it and discovered who she really was. I initially bought the book for one story contained within, and then I erroneously heard a review of her work that I didn’t approve of at the time and I just shelved it away. Only recently did I learn the truth about her and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Just look up the prices of the books that were published in her lifetime from say, 1950 to when she died in 1964. They’re stupid expensive. I just received today Mystery and Manners published a year after her death and I was lucky to get it for a good price. Her, “Complete Stories” from 1971 are very expensive too. I think I got the only hardcover under $30.

There was recently a bio-pic movie made about her that will be shown on public broadcasting in March. For something like this, I’ll have to break my rule about watching TV. I did see a YouTube clip of the movie where the actor Tommy Lee Jones said, “I’ve read everything she’s ever written”. She died in 1964 at the age of 39 from complications from Lupus.

I’m hoping to go visit her home place in Milledgeville, GA soon. It’s only about two hours south of here. Anyway .... back to the quote.

“The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it”. - Flannery O’Connor
