The way I understand it, it's mainly swallowing pills that causes this risk, buccal or under the tongue(sublingual) doesn't have as high of a risk of DVT though it's near impossible to not sometimes swallow some of it so it probably isn't the best method for you, especially since there are alternatives like the patch. Swallowing also causes it to pass through the liver which is rough on it, and the liver turns it into estrone, which is a weaker estrogen that's not that effective.
