Some drugs commonly used to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) may be preferable to pioglitazone, or at least have a milder side effect profile, while still promoting fat redistribution.
Metformin is perhaps the most commonly prescribed drug for T2DM. It's regarded as one of the safest drugs, although getting your lipids and other blood chemistry tested regularly is essential if you're taking a drug long-term.
Bromocriptine, an older drug for Parkinsonism but approved in the US for T2DM, also redistributes fat from visceral to subcutaneous fat stores.
