Maintenance doesn't necessarily even involve the same herbs as development. PM is certainly strong and has the most developmental effects. A small dose can be useful for maintenance, but it doesn't have to be something as strong as PM. Since your hormone requirement is lower and perhaps you might want a different mix of receptor stimulation it's entirely possible you will be fine with saw palmetto and fenugreek or maybe hops as your maintenance instead of full on PM.
The sterility thing is a little exaggerated I think. I have no doubt some folks may be more affected than others. But I think most people only lose some size and perhaps some drive. Unless you really sock it to your system with a mix of stuff, PM alone doesn't seem to cause any inability to perform in my experience. If you stop everything, you will lose some volume within weeks and your breasts will lose their fullness. Any tissue and duct development is probably going to stay though, so you'll have somewhere for the grand-kids to hang their jackets. I have found a very similar change to what doodlebug describes with respect to my cross-dressing desires. The good news about the mental shift is that if you do experience it the same way we do, you'll be fine with it. That's how it works.
