you don't have linux, you have windows.
The versions probably aren't conflicting, it sounds like it took care of the upgrade properly. Sometimes the older versions of a program work better than a new one, other times the newer ones work better. The toolkit or other program is probably conflicting or causing java to be blocked. Javascript usually comes with firefox. I don't know more, an admin will have to assist you.

Can you try disabling javascript in your browser? Some things, like the emoticons, won't work, but you might be able to post, etc.
