Diastasis

#1

Lotus,

I have been using the Tupler Technique to treat my diastasis, with great success to date in improving my appearance and making visible the femininisation of my body that has occurred but was masked by the diastasis. The technigue works by bringing together the rectus (six pack) muscles so that the stretching out of the linea alba, the gristle that connects the rectus muscles down the centre line of the abdomen, so that over time it can lose the stretch and recover its strength. If the linea alba is actually ruptured as it may be in my case, the technique reckons that it will not repair the rupture, although cotinuing the regimen of the technique will keep the diastasis closed.

I was very interested by your recent posts relating to MSM. Do you think that taking MSM might help repair my linea alba?

Greetings, hugs and best wishes

Hi Annie,

You know, it took a while sifting through the published material about MSM, I've found one really has to be objectionable when analyzing the results. To me, it's amusing to find results stating there's insufficient clinical research, ha!.

Anyways, MSM from a clinical standpoint relieves oxidative stress, anti-cancer properties, decreases muscle damage, suppresses breast cancer, anti-inflammatory, helps relieve osteoarthritis, etc..etc.

Annie, I couldn't find anything that suggests MSM can repair your linea alba, only consuming foods that boost collagen can help repair the diastasis. I'm no doctor that's for sure, so I can't offer a medical opinion at all, however I can tell you that I take MSM myself and believe it helps for me. So, I hope in part the info provided may help in some way. Wink

Many thanks, Lotus

The non-medical references repeatedly state that MSM promotes the synthesis of collagen, though I have failed to locate scientific backing for these statements. However, since the linea alba is a collagenous (?) structure, it seems reasonable that MSM might help its repair. Anyway, there doesn't seem likely to be any harm in trying it.Rolleyes My waist line continues to reduce (although I can't yet (ever?) compete with Sammie), so anything that may help to 'fix' the reduction is welcome.

Hey there Annie,

Lol, well hearing the words “my waistline line continues reduce” should be music in to the ears. Wink Sorry for the MSM info overload, Rolleyes Mostly it was FYI, although others can certainly use it for reference, however my brain is fried but better informed, lol.

I don't know whether the MSM is doing anything to safeguard my waistline, but it is certainly doing wonders for my backache.Big Grin Now I must find a cheaper source, since the only place locally that stocks it is too expensive. I expect that Swanson's would be a good place to try, but they have a formidable list of things they won't ship to Canada, which seems to include anything I want from them.Dodgy

There is a raft-load of clinical research validating the effects choline stabilized orthosilicic acid, sold under the trade name of Biosil. Basically it is one of the few relatively easily absorbable forms of silicate (yes silicon) and promotes the health and production of collagen in the body, and thus connective tissue (the linea alba is connective tissue.) It is frequently prescribed to help with skin, hair and nail problems, bone mineral density, and has a better track record with respect to OA joint pain than chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine. Biosil is relatively expensive in that a month's supply of drops costs about US$25 to 30. Fortunately you can now purchase other brands as well, some being less expensive. Not sure about comparative quality.

Here's a good review of orthosilicic acid and it's therapeutic effects to get you started: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3546016/

Hope this helps

Thank you, Chrishoney. As always I respect your advice and will look further into it. In the meanwhile, I have a bottle of capsules entitled Silica - Aqueous Spring Horsetail Extract, with each 500mg capsule said to be equivalent to 17mg of bioavailable silica. The words 'Healthy Skin, Hair and Nails', and I'd forgotten I had it. appear on the label. I might as well try it while tracking down some Biotin or equivalent.

Horsetails are renowned for having a silica content and were commonly called scouring rushes because of that. I'm not sure of the bioavailability of the silicon in horsetails but it can't hurt. Also, biotin is something else entirely. You really want orthosilicic acid--at least that's what has been researched.

Annie,

I want to thank you for bringing this condition, diastasis recti, to my attention. I had no idea what it was until I googled it after reading your post. It seems I too have it. mine is in a v pattern from the op of my abs, at the rib cage, to my belly button. I self diagnosed, then went to see my GP.

I will be starting physical therapy for it ASAP. I'm really happy that my food baby has a chance of disappearing!
