Yes, but, on one hand, at least she won! One thing, though, is that there are SOOO MANY negative comments below!!!! In one way, I'm SORT OF surprise that SOOOO many people in this day & age are SOOOO closed-minded!! Then I remember how VERY many people in this country STILL can't even spell simple words!! NOW I understand why there are so many troglodytes making those rude comments!!

Quote:Nicole, now 17, is a biological male who identified as a girl beginning at age 2.

Since the age of 2 LOL I donno about that really... I will say she is a woman though as far as Im concerned and I gotta even question the "biological male" label...

Im sure she's planning to get that fixed when she's old enough...

Its a shame her supportive family couldnt have put her in a different school where nobody knew her....

I personally cant imagine going full time female as a teen back in my day, It just didnt happen very often back then.... I think its great that its possible todaySmile I know I would have likely transitioned MUCH earlier if I was young today... Its nice to seeCool

The comments are pretty sad but the fact is its likely very few of them would say that shit in person and if they did they would likely be the minority in a crowd.... Thats HUGE and its only gonna get better from here Cool

As much as it might be awkward to say here, I'd side with the school, but not for the reason you might suspect.

First, I applaud the school for taking some kind of action at all, even though the family was offended by it. It would have been far too easy for the administration to say, "Sorry, you have a penis. Go use the stand up potties."

This case reminds me of the woman who complained about being offered to use the managers office at Target when she asked if there was somewhere she could sit to breastfeed her child, instead of simply being brought a chair. The school was protecting Maines from possible ridicule by other students. All it would take was one time where some overly macho jackass decided to harass (or worse) her for something I'm sure she already feels intense insecurity over, and instead of 75K, her family would own that school.

Lastly, this ruling opens a floodgate. It has established precident. Boys can now walk into the girls bathroom whenever they want by simply saying they suffer from GD. The school isn't going to pay for the deep psychiatric testing to confirm, and expecting the family to produce the proof would be asking for another lawsuit. Some families aren't as supportive as others, and I can foresee ignorant and intolerant father-figures screaming at an administrator for demanding "proof that my boy is a fag."

Etna I agree with that for the most part KINDA it does give the haters some ammo to push back with....

But hey if a kid feels better going to school dressed and acting a certain way really is it a big deal??? I dont think so....

Should the poor kid have to deal with endless BS from psychs that could never truly understand whats going on just to use the freaking bathroom??? I dont think so, LIVE AND LET LIVE Smile

Both Good Points, its difficult to find a compromise/balance between the two.

The administrators were trying to find an answer to a question they never thought they would be asked. Their solution might be exclusionary, but it is moral high ground. Let's look at very possible situations from both sides of the bathroom wall.

If Maines was forced to use the male bathroom, it exposed her to the risk of immature bullies. "You want to be a bitch, we'll show you what happens to bitches."

If allowed to use the female restroom, it exposed Maines to the risk of being the social victim, falling suspect to any accusations of sexual misconduct.

Yes it's pretty fucked up that people can't look past chromosomes to determine a generic binary, but let's at least not fault the school for reacting in a perfectly normal way, that was neither disrespectful, malicious, nor discriminatory.
